Westlaw Australia Tip - How to find an Act or section of an Act

Last Published: May 08, 2020

The Global Search bar is the fastest way to find the text of a legislative provision for Acts, Rules or Regulations, currently in force or repealed after 2021.

  1. To find an Act, Rule or Regulation, type the full name of the legislation into Global Search bar. The Typeahead feature will provide suggestions. e.g. Family Law Act 1975

  1. Click the legislation title from the suggestions to display the table of provisions. If you refer to specific legislation regularly, click the Add to Favourites button. You can use the Favourites button in the top blue menu to go directly to the bookmarked legislation.
  1. If you know the provision number, type the provision number followed by the full name of the Act.

  2. Click on the section/provision required from the suggestion list to go straight to it. e.g. s 79 of the Family Law Act 1975.

  1. The Citing References tab provides links to Cases and Secondary Sources that have referred to that provision.
