Closing / Opening a Matter in Firm Central

Closing a Matter

1) Navigate to the matter you wish to close.

2) Click the Gear icon in the upper right corner of the Matter Profile sub tab of the matter you want to close.

3) Click Close Matter.

4) The Close Matter box appears.

5) The Close Date is automatically populated with today's date. You can change the date by clicking the Calendar icon and selecting a different date.  The Close Date must be later than the Open Date.

6) Enter any notes you want to include with the closed matter.

7) Click Close Matter.

8) The "Closed" status is now displayed in the Status Summary section of the Matter Profile tab. It includes the closed date and any notes you have entered.  You cannot search or edit the Status Summary.

Note:  Only users with “Owner” access may close a matter.

9) If you wish the closed status to show immediately in Time & Billing, perform data sync, otherwise it will sync overnight.

Re-opening a Matter

1) Navigate to the matter you wish to close.

2) Click the Gear icon in the upper right corner of the Matter Profile sub tab of the matter you want to close.

3) Click Reopen Matter.

4) The Reopen Matter box appears.

5) The Open Date is automatically populated with today's date. You can change the date by clicking the Calendar icon and selecting a different date.

6) Enter any notes you want to include with the closed matter.

7) Click Reopen Matter.

8) The "Open" status is now displayed in the Status Summary section of the Matter Profile tab. It includes this date and any notes you have entered. You cannot search or edit the Status Summary.

9) If you wish the status to update immediately in Time & Billing, perform data sync, otherwise it will sync overnight.

Check the Status of a Matter in Time & Billing

1) Go to Client Information screen and bring the client and matter into focus.

2) Type MM (Matter Maintenance) into the shortcut box.

3) Check the Closed Matter field – this should now be populated with “Y” for closed. “N” for Open.

NOTES:

  • If a matter is closed it will not appear in search results. You can view a client’s closed matters from the Client details screen under closed matters.
  • The only entries that can be posted to a closed matter are trust receipts.
  • Closing a matter is used to prevent more time & expenses being recorded while you are waiting for payment from the client.

Please note that closing matters only Time & Billing reflects only in Time & Billing; not in Firm Central and this not recommended.
