Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie has welcomed the appointment of Queensland’s new Chief Magistrate, The Honourable Tim Carmody.

Judge Carmody was originally a police officer, a former Family Court Judge, an adjunct professor of law at Queensland University of Technology and was Queensland’s Crime Commissioner from 1998 to 2002.

Judge Carmody will be sworn in as a Judge of the District Court and formally took over from Chief Magistrate Brendan Butler on 16 September 2013. Mr Butler will return to his role as District Court Judge.

As Chief Magistrate, Judge Carmody’s responsibilities will include determining whether there is enough evidence for the state’s highest profile and most complex criminal matters to proceed to trial.
