Legal update, Online safety: recent developments in the regulation of online harms provides an overview of recent developments in the regulation of online content in Australia including those aimed at addressing new harms arising from generative AI (GenAI). Developments include the registration of new industry codes and standard for online service providers, the inclusion of additional safeguards in the Basic Online Safety Expectations, the early commencement of the statutory review of the Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth), and proposed legislation creating new criminal offences in relation to the sharing of non-consensual deepfake sexually explicit material.
