Future of Australian Legal Education Conference

In August this year, Thomson Reuters and the Australian Academy of Law (AAL) co-hosted the "Future of Australian Legal Education Conference" in Sydney. Opened by the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, the Hon James Allsop AO, the conference celebrated the 90th anniversary of The Australian Law Journal, the 10th anniversary of the Australian Academy of Law, and marked 30 years since the release of the Pearce Report on Australian law schools.

A keynote speaker at the conference was Professor Martha C. Nussbaum from the University of Chicago Law School. A world-renowned philosopher and distinguished author, Professor Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago. She is also appointed to the Philosophy Department and an associate in the Classics Department, the Divinity School and the Political Science Department.

Special ALJ interview

As part of the AAL/ALJ conference, two members of the The Australian Law Journal’s Editorial Board – General Editor, the Hon Justice François Kunc, and Assistant General Editor, Dr Ruth Higgins SC – conducted a special on-camera interview with Professor Martha Nussbaum.

Thomson Reuters has now released special excerpts of the interview on its YouTube channel, plus the extended interview in 4 parts.

Their engaging and wide-ranging conversation includes topics such as:

  • Does teaching about emotion make for better lawyers?
  • Why lawyers need a broad social education
  • Technology and the law: a threat, an opportunity, or both?
  • What’s a literary imagination and should lawyers have one?
