As part of an ongoing reinvigoration program for the Australian Law Journal, a range of new Sections are being commissioned to ensure that subscribers are receiving a wide range of valuable and useful content.

We are very pleased to announce the following appointments:

Environmental Law

The Hon. Justice Rachel Pepper has joined the ALJ as Section Editor for a brand new Environmental Law Section. Justice Pepper was appointed as a Judge of the Land and Environment Court of NSW in May 2009. From 1997 until her appointment in 2009, Justice Pepper practised as a barrister at the New South Wales Bar.  Her principal areas of practice were general commercial law and public law, including constitutional law.  While at the bar, Justice Pepper was a member of Bar Council from 2000-2009 and was Secretary of the Bar Council from 2006 to 2009.

Constitutional Law

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Anne Twomey will share her expertise on Constitutional Law with readers of the ALJ. Anne Twomey is a Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Sydney.  She has previously worked for the High Court of Australia, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Research Service, the Senate Legal and Constitutional Committee and The Cabinet Office of New South Wales.  She has written books on the Constitution of New South Wales, the Crown and the Australia Acts 1986, and publishes widely in the field of constitutional law.

Human Rights

Professor Simon Rice OAM has joined the ALJ as Section Editor for a brand new Human Rights Section. Simon has worked and researched extensively in anti-discrimination, human rights and access to justice issues. He is currently Professor of Law and Director of Law Reform and Social Justice at the ANU College of Law, and Chair of the Australian Capital Territory Law Reform Advisory Council.

Around the nation: Western Australia

The Hon. Justice Kenneth Martin will join our team of Section Editors to provide a regular report from Western Australia. Kenneth James Martin was sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 20 March, 2009. He was admitted to practice in Western Australia in December 1978 after serving his articles with the law firm Parker & Parker. He served as associate to the late Sir Ronald Wilson AC, KBE, CMG, at the High Court of Australia during 1980 – 81. Justice Martin then completed a degree of Master of Laws at the University of London (reading in Restitution, Maritime Law, general Insurance and International Business Transactions) before returning to Parker & Parker in 1982, where he was a partner from 1984 and in-house counsel from 1989 – 1991. He joined the independent bar at Francis Burt Chambers in 1992 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1997.

These new recruits join a distinguished Editorial Board lead by Acting Justice Peter Young AO as General Editor and Angelina Gomez as Assistant Editor.  Their combined expertise is of great benefit to readers of the ALJ and we take great pleasure in welcoming the newest additions to the team.
