We are very pleased to announce that a brand-new subtitle outlining principles of Animal Law has been commissioned for The Laws of Australia, to be authored by John Mancy.

As part of TLA's ongoing enhancement program, we are now more committed than ever to ensuring the encylopaedia is useful to practitioners by keeping it up to date and comprehensive. As the law changes, we will continue to deliver new Subtitles and restructure existing material so that TLA best serves our readers' needs.

Animal Law

Once considered to be on the periphery of legal studies, Animal Law is now offered at more than six Australian law schools, and is considered to be a valuable academic discipline and a significant part of legal education.  

Animal law crosses over with numerous core legal areas including Contract, Property, and Tort, not to mention countless areas of government regulation. Practitioners will appreciate that cases in almost any field may have an Animal Law element. This new subtitle will utilise TLA’s practical, propositional style and comprehensive cross-referencing to provide coverage of a growing area of practice.

The Animal Law subtitle will focus on the laws that govern the legal status and treatment of animals in Australia. In particular, it will provide detailed coverage of the regulation of:

• animals and agriculture,
• companion animals,
• animals and entertainment,
• animals in research & education,
• veterinary surgeons, and
• animals in the wild.

As well as practical information on litigating animal law cases.

About the author

John Mancy is the Founding Editor of the Australian Animal Protection Law Journal (2008+). He has practiced as a barrister and has lectured law. John has also published legal periodicals such as the NSW Judgments Bulletin and has worked as a professional and freelance journalist.
