The Road Transport Act 2013 (NSW)

The Road Transport Bill 2013 (NSW) was passed in March and was assented to on 3 April 2013. It came into effect as the Road Transport Act 2013 as of 1 July 2013.

The Road Transport Act 2013 provides for the consolidation of a number of Road Transport Acts into a single Act. The purpose of the reform is to consolidate, not make major substantive changes. The rationalisation of scattered and duplicated provisions should assist in navigating the road transport legislation. Apart from reducing the number of statutes, these reforms have also aimed to remove anomalies, inconsistency and a degree of complexity in the legislation.

Motor Vehicle Law NSW will be responding to this major change by reviewing and consolidating all of the current commentary attached to the previous acts for a streamlined transition to the new legislation framework. Online subscribers will have access to the new legislation shortly and the reviewed commentary written by Nic Angelov progressively through July. Paper subscribers will receive the updated legislation and commentary in two stages, the first in July and the second will be available by the end of August 2013. Until then, the commentary attached to the previous legislation has been transplanted to its new corresponding location for reference. The repealed legislation and commentary will be archived and available for online and paper subscribers to continue to access.
