Property Law Review Launch

Property Law Review, Thomson Reuters' newest journal, was launched last Tuesday night (15 March) at the UNSW Law School city campus.

General Editors Professor Brendan Edgeworth, Dr Lyria Bennett Moses and Cathy Sherry welcomed members of the judiciary, members of the profession and academics to mark the occasion.

Professor Edgeworth began the evening by expressing, on behalf of the General Editors, the vision of the journal:

"we do hope that it will bring to the foreground issues that currently lurk in the background, and so give property law a prominence in the academic literature that it may recently have lost.  We want to bring it back closer to the centre of the legal landscape."

Working with the General Editors, as Professor Edgeworth noted, is an Editorial Board which "without exaggeration, represents some of the most distinguished researchers and writers in property law in the Anglophonic world at this time".

Launching the journal was special guest, Sir Anthony Mason, former Chief Justice of the High Court. In his address, Sir Anthony reflected on how the concept of property has come to be understood quite differently from his student days due to legal and technological change.

With respect to the journal's coverage of both real and personal property, Sir Anthony said:

"There is a wealth of uncharted territory in the field of personal property for creative development by judges, a task in which both practising and academic lawyers will have the opportunity of making a distinctive contribution.  The articles in the first issue of the new Law Journal are an illustration of what can be achieved. "

Commenting that Property Law Review "promises to be a forum for stimulating discussion", Sir Anthony went on to declare the journal "well and truly launched".

The journal was first published in February this year and is currently accessible on Legal Online as well as in hard copy formats.

The full text of speeches from the evening will be published in the next part of Property Law Review
