New NSW driver licence requirements for international students

/
Content updates

Under transitional provisions which expire on 1 March 2025, international students will be required to obtain a NSW driver licence.

International students who arrived in NSW before 1 July 2023 can continue to drive on their valid overseas licence until that licence expires or until 28 February 2025, whichever is the earliest. Then they must obtain a NSW driver licence.

International students who arrived in NSW on or after 1 July 2023 are permitted to drive on their valid overseas driver licence for a maximum of 6 months. After 6 months, an international student must obtain a NSW driver licence.

If an international student holds either a New Zealand driver licence, or an Australian driver licence from another state or territory, they can drive on NSW roads using that licence for up to 3 months. At this point, they must obtain a NSW licence.

If the overseas licence is not written in English, the licence holder must also carry an English translation, or an International Driving Permit, with the licence at all times. For more information see the International students and the law chapter written by the author in the Lawyers Practice Manual NSW.
